Research Program Description

I. Multi-modal mixed traffic flow modeling

i. Joint optimization of connected bus trajectories & traffic signals (JMTR_2301)

Leveraging the advantages brought by the connected environment and fully integrating the macroscopic state of mixed traffic flow with the microscopic trajectories of connected buses, the connected bus speed and traffic signals can be integrated into macro-microscopic models of mixed traffic flow to capture traffic flow dynamics more accurately by treating connected buses as moving bottlenecks.

II. Traffic signal optimization

i. Robust time-of-day traffic signal control (JMTR_2204, JMTR_2305)

Time-of-day (TOD) fixed timing strategy can be adopted in tackling traffic demand fluctuation within the day for urban signalized intersections. This program is initiated to develop methods & models that can generate efficient TOD control plans with robust signal timings for isolated (JMTR_2204) and arterial (JMTR_2305) signalized intersections.

JMTR_2204: Joint optimization of TOD intervals and robust signal timing for isolated intersection.

Keywords: Bi-level optimization, Arrival-departure curve, BLEAQ_II algorithm, SUMO.

JMTR_2305: Joint optimization of TOD intervals and robust signal timings for network-level intersections

ii. Optimization of contraflow left-turn lanes (JMTR_2107, JMTR_2020, JMTR_2019)

The contraflow left-turn lane (CLL) design provides a novel approach to alleviate congestion for those signalized intersections with heavy left-turn traffic. This program is initiated to develop models and methods to optimize traffic signal control schemes for isolated, arterial, and network levels of signalized intersections with CLL.

JMTR_2019: Traffic signal optimization for the isolated intersection with CLL

Keywords: queue accumulation polygon, Genetic algorithm.

JMTR_2020: Traffic signal optimization for arterial intersections with CLL

Keywords: Multi-objective sustainability, NSGA-II.

JMTR_2107: Traffic signal optimization for grid-level intersections with CLL

Keywords: Nonlinear programming.
